We were asked to shrink wrap another outside broadcast unit for a Chinese TV company. These units are built in the UK before being shipped to the customer in China – a long journey by road and sea. In the past, a thick covering of wax was used to protect these highly valuable units but since they first tested a shrink wrap cover, shrink wrapping has been the preferred method.
For this job, a 12m wide 300 micron shrink wrap film was used. First, two squares of shrink wrap were temporarily held in place on the front and back end of the trailer. Next the 12m film was pulled over and along the roof before being folded down each side.
This is where using centre folded shrink film makes life so much easier. Once the shrink wrap film has been pulled off the roll and down the centre of the roof it is just unfolded down each side and is in the correct position.
Once the shrink film was unfolded it was heat welded to the front and back sections, taped around the bottom of the unit and shrunk off. Finally, openings were cut in the shrink wrap for lights, doors and hatches.
